The swivel allows the dogs to switch sides with each other as often as they'd like without getting their leashes tangled up. I like to make the individual ends long enough so that your dogs have room to move around, smell, use the nearest tree, and have the freedom to walk independently of each other. The handle part is nice and thick to give you a good comfortable grip.
